The findings may point toward ways to develop more effective ways of diagnosing Ebola and treatment. Samples of blood, plasma and semen from Thomas Kollmann, a Dutch nurse who contracted Ebola in the DRC in 2014, were tested by four of the researchers, including a physician who had treated Kollmann, for the presence of Ebola and related viruses, the team reported in the Feb. 9 online edition of Nature. The findings: Kollmann’s semen sample tested positive for Ebola, he did not have Ebola, and is now healthy; His plasma sample tested positive for Ebola, he had Ebola, and is now healthy; and His blood sample tested negative for Ebola, he did not have Ebola, and is now healthy. The researchers said, however, that it is impossible to say conclusively that the Ebola virus was transmitted in the ways suggested by the test results, and that Kollmann’s test results do not rule out a wide range of other possibilities. “We cannot exclude transmission by sexual intercourse, because one could not confirm with certainty that the individual had used condoms,” said Cornelis Scheepers, a virologist at Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, one of the researchers.
